AI Track Mimicking Drake And The Weeknd Submitted For Grammys

An anonymous artist known as Ghostwriter went viral earlier this summer with the A.I.-generated track “Heart On My Sleeve” that recreates the voices of Drake and The Weeknd. The producer's reps revealed in a new interview with The New York Times that the track has been submitted for Best Rap Song and Song Of The Year at next year’s Grammys — and Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason Jr. confirmed “it’s absolutely eligible because it was written by a human.” Those specific honors are awarded to songwriters as opposed to its performers. The lyrics for “Heart On My Sleeve” were written by Ghostwriter, but he chose to have the computer-generated voices perform it. Still, Grammy rules require that nominated songs have “generation distribution,” meaning “the broad release of a recording, available nationwide via brick-and-mortar stores, third-party online retailers and/or streaming services.” Ghostwriter's track was initially available on streaming services, until Universal Music threatened legal action.
